How long is wisdom tooth removal recovery?

Most patients need only a few days to recover after having their wisdom teeth extracted. Our experienced dental team performs gentle, comfortable extractions and will answer all your questions before you head home after your procedure.

We’ll also provide a detailed list of what to do once you get home, giving you the best chance of a speedy recovery.

How Long Is Wisdom Tooth Removal Recovery?

After we extract one or more of your wisdom teeth, it’s important to go home and rest. Most people return to normal daily activities within three to five days, and within one to two weeks, the surface of your gums should be mostly healed. It takes longer for the underlying bone to heal, however.

Here’s a general timeline, although every patient is different:

  • First 24 hours — Blood clots begin to form, and bleeding should slow down. Make sure to eat soft foods.
  • Day 2 and 3 — Most of your soreness and swelling will occur between 48 and 72 hours after your procedure. You can put ice packs on your face and take over-the-counter pain relievers to alleviate discomfort.
  • Days 4-7 — You should be feeling much better by this time. Most people return to work and school without difficulty.
